Chapter Five

Miles placed the phone back on his desk. “He was supposed to be happy.” He wheeled his chair around to stare at the manicured front lawn. “I’m not letting him go. God, I’d be crazy to fire him. Didn’t we have a deal?” he muttered to himself. “A deal with all the time in the world to fuck and play if I hadn’t been an asshole.”

He folded his arms and watched the winding driveway. When he spotted Fynn’s dented blue Honda, he grinned. He’d been lonely too long and Fynn filled the void in his heart. Then again, he’d fucked everything up by abandoning Fynn the night before.

“I’ll set things right.” Miles surged out of his seat. Damn it, he’d get his man, or at least give Fynn a reason to stick around. Besides, he didn’t want his man to work for him. He wanted them to be equals. The letter was just a formality.

The intercom on his desk crackled. “Mr Gold’s here to see you.” Miss Behrens, his secretary, continued, “Send him in?”

“Thank you.” Miles sat back down and righted his tie. He breathed in through his nose and out through his mouth. Calm and patience. He folded his hands again. This wasn’t like a real estate transaction. This was his life and his heart on the table for his lover to either take or smash. God. He hated himself for being an asshole. He should’ve said something other than resignation. Damn it.

The doors opened and Fynn stepped into the room. Instead of his formal attire, he wore a simple button-down in blue plaid and jeans. The sight of him so casual made Miles’ mouth water and his thoughts scatter.

“Seven, maybe eight buttons and he’s mine for the taking,” Miles muttered and counted the buttons on the shirt.

“Here’s my letter, Sir.” Fynn placed an envelope on the desk. “Effective immediately. I’ve collected my things from the limo. Will there be anything else?”

“Sit.” Miles nodded to the chair. He waited until Fynn finally sat down before he continued. “I’m not an easy man to deal with and you make this hard. I’m a bitch to love. But I believe we had a deal. We didn’t shake and that’s on me, but there was a verbal deal.”

“Sir?”

“I want a date.”

Fynn crooked one eyebrow.

Shit. He’d fucked things up. One look at Fynn and his brain unplugged. He’d never been so sex-crazed in his entire life.

“Look.” Fynn scooted his chair back and the screech echoed in the large room. “You fired me. We had a deal that I belonged to you, right? A verbal deal, you say. Fine. You don’t fucking leave someone in the middle of the God damn night if you want to control someone. You stick around. Give them something to hold on to, not yank it away because things got too heavy for you.” The veins bulged in his neck and his face flushed. His voice rose and cracked. “I thought you were different, but you’re not. You want what you want, then toss it away when it’s no longer important.
